Geinige ingezonden brief uit de genderbenderwereld van de universitaire safe spaces. Slecht verstaanbare Indiase docent Rechtsgeleerdheid aan de Uni Tilburg klaagt over RACISME bij kritiek op haar beroerde binnensmondse Engels.

Hoi GeenStijl,

TL;DR: een Indiase universitair docent is in de evaluatie van haar vak aangesproken op haar slechte Engels, zij vindt dat aanstootgevend, beledigend en discriminerend en dreigt met rechtszaken.

Ik ben student rechtsgeleerdheid aan de Universiteit van Tilburg (officieel natuurlijk 'Tilburg University') en kreeg vanochtend onderstaande e-mail in mijn inbox. Dit semester heb ik het vak 'The World's Legal Systems' gevolgd, dat voor een deel door een Indiase universitair docent, dr. Geertanjali Srikantan, wordt gegeven. Zij is een native speaker van Engels, maar wel met een heel zwaar Indiaas accent. Bovendien praat zij binnensmonds, waardoor zij best slecht te verstaan is. Dat heeft een student (niet ik) ingevuld bij de vakevaluatie, die je altijd na afloop van het semester kan invullen. Deze evaluatie is bij de docent in het verkeerde keelgat geschoten en zij heeft vervolgens aan alle studenten deze e-mail gestuurd. Bovendien is op BlackBoard (het digitale onderwijssysteem) dezelfde boodschap geplaatst. De tekst van haar e-mail spreekt voor zich. Kunnen jullie misschien hier wat mee?

This concerns the ongoing evaluation of this course at http://evaluatie.uvt.nl.

I have reported the following comment as being offensive, insulting and discriminatory as per the Code of conduct of the University to the Education Support Team.

"De docent die de colleges gaf over Islamitisch en Indiaas recht sprak slecht Engels. Vooral de uitspraak laat soms te wensen over en heb ik als storend ervaren."

As you may be aware, student evaluations determine the existence of a course and a lecturer’s chances of promotion and tenure. It is in this context that I view the abovementioned remarks as an effort to link my English language proficiency (a requirement in the evaluation) to my accent, which is a product of my cultural background and my national origins. This is illegal and discriminatory under European law and in many jurisdictions including the Netherlands. Accent discrimination is acceptable in certain forms of pedagogy when it involves very young children and in the case of language teaching (although that is legally questionable – please see Case: 2177/2009/(TN)DK).  I can assure you that you will have an extremely hard time convincing any court of law in the Netherlands that I do not have a good command of the English language. 

It is important that we treat each other in a respectful and ethical manner. Please ensure that your comments and feedback in the evaluation of this course meet these requirements. I welcome constructive and productive feedback based on a neutral evaluation of my teaching skills and not based on my accent, gender and cultural background. Many of you have provided such feedback and I would like to encourage others to continue doing so.

I remain committed to our university’s goals of endowing students with knowledge, skills and character and will work with students to realise this goal.
