Best een prikkelend artikel eigenlijk door universiteit docent dr. Dan Hassler-Forest Media Studies uni Utrecht, maar toch wel echt even een aantal kanttekeningen.

Getiteld ‘The Lion King’ is a fascistic story. No remake can change that is dit zo'n beetje de strekking:

"Bad as it is that the powerful are presented as inherently superior to all other species, things get substantially worse once the hyenas are introduced. (...) They transparently represent the black, brown and disabled bodies that are forcefully excluded from this fascist society. Noticeably marked by their ethnically coded “street” accents, the hyenas blatantly symbolize racist and anti-Semitic stereotypes of “verminous” groups that form an inherent threat to society.

Just as fascist leaders constantly pinpoint specific groups they seek to villainize and cast out from “natural” society, the film’s heroes are preoccupied with keeping their kingdom free of contamination by undesirable elements (...). With these elements in place, the film’s plot centers on what happens when the “natural” supremacy of traditional patriarchal rule is interrupted. Simba’s final ascent to the throne, his masculine roar returning Scar’s dystopia to its Edenic natural state, is nothing less than the Führer Principle at work: the idea that those we entrust with positions of leadership are blessed with a natural, even divine superiority."

Dat De Leeuwenkoning een dierlijke natuurlijke hiërarchie al antropomorfiserend verheerlijkt klopt natuurlijk wel gewoon. Het is alleen niet helemaal eerlijk dit dan weer meteen fascisme te noemen, want het is overduidelijk gewoon een verlichte absolute monarchie en het zijn juist Scar en z'n hyena's die expliciet als nazi's (en een heel klein beetje islam) afgeschilderd worden. En dit afdoen met louter "the explicit Nazi iconography serves primarily to distract us from the heroes’ own fascism" is echt een extreem zwaktebod.

**De Leeuwenkoning gaat niet over de ideale staatsvorm
**Maar daar gaat het niet om, want De Leeuwenkoning is in essentie geen verhaal over hoe een menselijke maatschappij georganiseerd dient te worden. Het verhaal is een antwoord op twee vragen: 

1- Welke individuele eigenschappen stellen iemand optimaal in staat het archetypische (eeuwig bestaande) landschap van chaos, harmonie en tirannie te navigeren?
2- Langs welke route vindt en integreert iemand die eigenschappen?

Dit proces is wat Carl Jung "individuatie" noemt.
