QUIZ - Is dit liedje transfoob?
A) Ja.
D) Anders, namelijk...
E) Hi Ryan, thanks for your question about this. The song is understood to be transphobic because of the lyrics and the sentiments that they support in present day. The lyrics, and then he was a she, devalues the experiences and identities of trans folks. The first issue with this is that it minimizes the experiences of oppression, and obstacles that trans people must overcome in order to be accepted in society (its not as simple as shaving ones legs). It suggests that a change of appearance is a required to identify as trans, and this is a myth. Some trans people choose to undergo a physical transition through gender affirmation surgery, while others do not. Additionally, stating that conversing, spending time with, or having sex with a trans person is taking a walk on the wild side is also problematic. It labels trans folks as wild or unusual or unnatural which is a dangerous rhetoric. Additionally, there is a continuous issue of fetishizing trans people in popular media and porn. Both of these implications result in the dehumanization trans people and their experiences, rather than acknowledging them as true, real, and deserving of rights. While we acknowledge that the song was written with certain purpose and intention, we would also emphasize that media is not always consumed in the ways that it was intended. Additionally, even though the song wasnt produced that long ago and it was innovative in the terms of trans inclusion at the time, it is now being consumed in a different societal context. What was seen as a step in the right direction then, now may be considered less so. Considering this, the CSA is committed to righting this wrong and making a more conscious effort to ensure we practice inclusion sentiments through as many avenues as possible.
