Interessant vraaggesprekje in de Nieuw-Zeelandse krant Sunday Star Times: aan het woord is Bram van der Kolk, mede-eigenaar van Megaupload die net als Kim Dotcom wegens het stelen van 500 miljoen dollar aan content op verzoek van de Amerikaanse overheid met veel machtsvertoon ("special tactics group and armed offenders officers were used") uit zijn huis werd getrokken en achter de tralies verdween. Van der Kolk is inmiddels op borgtocht vrij en gaat met zijn zoontje op de foto om zijn kant van het verhaal te vertellen. Een paar citaten: "I'm still in love with New Zealand despite everything that has happened." (..) "I really hope New Zealand will keep its dignity and can show that it is a sovereign state that has its own justice system." (..) "I couldn't believe it. I still can't believe it ... it doesn't matter who the opponent is, if it's the FBI or the American president himself, I'm still very confident we have a very strong case." (..) "I certainly can't imagine doing this for other countries. There seems to be some sort of favourable preference that has gone here." (..) "There is a huge amount of [New Zealand] resources and manpower in this." (..) "We were a little out of the ordinary in prison and it's quite a harsh environment so [Corrections staff] tried to look after us." (..) "I'm tough enough to deal with this situation, but the only thing that is really difficult is being separated from your family." (..) "I'm a humble programmer with a wife and two-year-old son". Onderdeel van de borgtocht is dat Van der Kolk (inkomsten: 2 miljoen dollar) geen internet mag gebruiken. Zijn moeder kon hij alleen bereiken via een oldskool telefoonlijn. Zijn vader is hem inmiddels komen bezoeken in NZ. De les die we hieruit leren? Als je auteursrechten schendt komt de Amerikaanse regering je keihard in je reet neuken. Ook al woon je in een dikke villa heel ver weg in een zichzelf soeverein noemend land met eigen wetten & regels. De harige vuist van de US-copyrightmaffia reikt heeeeeel ver.
